2008 mission trips

Honduras Mission Trips - Simpsonwood UMC participates in two different mission trips to Honduras in the summer. One team travels to central Honduras to work with small villages through Honduras Outreach International. The church has adopted the village of Agua Blanca and has assisted that village with construction of latrines, pouring cement floors and installing chimneys on their adobe stoves. We also provide the children with dental, health and hygiene information and conduct a Vacation Bible School experience to share the love of Christ with them and their parents.

The team consists of adults and youth who are 16 years or older. Contact Laurie Willing.

Our other mission team travels to the northern coast of Honduras to the town of La Ceiba. The teams work on constructing churches, medical clinics and community centers for small villages around La Ceiba.  New land has been purchased and next summer a church will be built in Santa Anna.  The team consists of adults and youth who are 17 years or older. Contact Tom Apsey.

Dates for 2008:  There will be two trips to La Ceiba (the coastal trip) this summer.  The first trip will be with Tom Apsey from May 31-June 8.  This will be a construction trip.  The second trip is from June 7-14 and will be led by Laurie Willing.  This will be a construction and VBS trip.  There is also a trip scheduled to the valley for May 31-June 7 and led by Laurie Wiling.  This will be a construction and VBS trip.  Deposits are now being taken to hold a spot for each of these trips. Contact Laurie Willing or Tom Apsey for details.

Costa Rica Mission Trip -  This summer, our college age and young adults will be going to work with United Methodist Volunteers in Mission in Costa Rica.  The dates are May 31-June 8. This trip is for students and young adults at least one year out of high school. The work will consist of a major construction project and VBS to approximately 45 kids.  Deposits are now being taken for this trip. Contact Matt Parker to sign up or for more information.

The cost of all of the trips will be approximately $1300. The money raised at the Garage Sale and Golf Tournament will help subsidize the cost of the trip for youth who volunteered in the fundraisers.

Spring Break Mission Trip -  This year, we will return to Jacksonville, FL for our Spring Break Mission Trip.  The dates are April 6-12.  The cost is $150.  This trip is for all youth currently in 7th-12th grade.  We will be working with various mission organizations.

The youth of our church have been to Jacksonville, FL to work with an inner city children's program (2005) and to Slidell, LA to assist a family with rebuilding their home, damaged by Hurricane Katrina (2006).  Contact Matt Parker or Laurie Willing.

Gatlinburg Mission Trip - The youth of our church (6th - 12th grade) will travel to the Gatlinburg, TN area this summer to work with TEAM Effort in reaching out to the communities in this mountainous area. Youth planning on participating in this mission trip must have worked at least 2 hours at the Garage Sale and participate in other fundraisers during the year.  Dates for 2008: July 6-12. Contact Matt Parker or Laurie Willing.
